Rambutan and Pulasan

Rambutan and pulasan are very well known tropical fruit, although pulasan not as popular as rambutan. Both of them almost look alike, red in colour, round, with white pulp, juicy, taste sweet and contain single seed. The easiest way to differentiate them is the texture of the fruit, which is rambutan is hairy while pulasan with short dull torns like lychee. Other differences are pulasan peel is thicker than rambutan peel and pulasan taste sweeter than rambutan. But rambutan more popular than pulasan because it widely cultivated. Rambutan derived its name from Malay word 'rambut' which mean hair. While pulasan derived its name also from Malay word 'pulas' which mean twist. That is the trick how to peel off the thick pulasan peel.

Something about Strawberry

Everyone know about strawberry, right? But do you know whether it the wild type or hybrid….?

The wild type strawberry is Fragaria vesca L. Strawberry that was planted for commercial actually was hybrid not wild type. Botanical name Fragaria X Ananassa (Duchesne) Guedes. also known as Garden Strawberry. The parents were F. chiloensis (L.) P. Miller from America and F. virginiana P. Miller from Europe. The wild type F. vesca L. also planted widely including in highland Malaysia for its’ fruits (Ong 2004).

The differences between the wild type and the Garden Strawberry are the wild type fruit is much smaller only 1 cm across. Seeds projecting from surface not sunk in the flesh. Side leaflets mostly unstalked; distinctly stalked in Garden Strawberry. End leaflet V-shaped at base while more rounded in Garden Strawberry (Farmer 2002).

Anyway, I read one nice article about our forest in the Nature News. It is about how to save tropical forests. Scientists and policy-makers will meet in Bonn this June to discuss this issue, whihc is one of the most pressing concerns to come out of UN Bali Summit in December last year, and the link is here. In the article you will get to see the forest cover in Borneo, which was released by UNEP, and I reproduce here for you to ponder (but do not skip reading the whole article in the original site).

Fragaria vesca

The beauty of Cameron was the scenery of the Camelia sinensis. Seating at the side, and having fresh air at noon, really different from the side of Kuala Lumpur.

Another that really amaze me when i came to Cameron was, Balanophora.... mm..can i call it as coral on the land? it was a parasite. Really having my oppurtunity to watch it by my own eyes...

Look carefully....there are leech that want to be take it's photo with it! haha

Have u ever been to Cameron? Me? Of course yes, strawberries, tea trees and the best was their flowers were big and beautiful.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, size as long as a pen.

If you ever had a chance to go for a holiday, I suggest u to go to Cameron. I bet u will enjoy the beautiful flowers and exhausted because you will take a lot of pictures, here and there until your feet can not stand any more or your camera out of batteries…It is a also a perfect place for us to learn and know more about plant.

Do ever eat or heard of “buah pisang kaki” or persimmon? My first impression when I heard such name few years before is that the tree must be same as banana tree. Trip to Cameron gave me chance see permmison’s tree. And the tree doesn’t same as banana tree at all, in fact it is a woody tree. Here is the pictures of persimmon’s tree n the fruit, also a few pictures of Camelia sinensis, fragaria vesca and others.

Chrysanthemum of Cameron Highland

Chrysanthemum belong to family Asteraceae, which is the second largest family of flowering plants, after the family Orchidaceae.

This family derive from the genus, Aster, which mean 'star', referring to its capitulum or the flower head.

The Malay name, 'kekwa' is a name borrowed form the Chinese, '菊花' (jú huā).

Chrysanthemum is named from the Greek prefix chrys-, which means golden (the colour of the original flowers), and -anthemon, meaning flower.

However, nowadays, there are many hybrids and thousands of cultivars of Chrysanthemum, developed for hourticulture purposes. We may find the flower occur in various forms, such as daisy-like, decorative, pompons or buttons. More over, besides its traditional of yellow, other colours are available, such as red, white, purple, and even green.

This Chrysanthemum flower can reach up to 20cm in size. In Japanese, it is called Oogiku, which means Big Chrysanthemum.

White Chrysanthemum is symbolic of death in some countries, e.g. in Korea and Japan, while in China, it is symbolic of lamentation

Cameron Highland is the biggest supplier of Chrysanthemum in Malaysia since the climate suitable for its plantation.

In 1920, it was discover that flowering of chrysanthemums was governed by the length of the day. This control can be known as photoperiod.

Later, it was found that it was the length of night, not the length of day, that cause the switch of flowering, and thus should called it as 'Long night Plant', instead of 'Short Day Plant' (SD).

Chrysanthemum in its nature habit is fall perennial plant. It will grow vegetatively during the long days (short nights) of summer. Bud initiation occur when the first critical photoperiod reached (9.5 hours of continuously darkness) as the days become shorter (nights longer) and when the night lengths greater than 10.5 hours (continuously), it will start flowering.

In other words, Chrysanthemum need long-day condition (LD) for growth and short-day (SD) condition for flowering, because in its physiological assumption, when the day light shorter, the fall are coming and is the time for flowering.

But since Malaysia has equally length of Days and Nights throughout the year, the Chrysanthemum supplier at Cameron Highland utilize its physiological habit by introducing the light treatment to control the flower blooming. This is because in commercial production, the aim is to produce flowering pot chrysanthemums with desired final size on a particular date.

One of the beautiful night view that can be seen at Cameron Highland, as the night-break lighting is used for photoperiod control purpose.

In medicinal value, Chrysanthemum can be remedies for anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and antihypertensive. Besides, it is claimed that it can clears heat, disperses wind, soothes the liver, and improves vision.

Chrysanthemum also is one of the beverage, as yellow or white chrysanthemum flowers can be boiled to make a sweet drink.

Lovely Cameron Highland Trip (16 &17 Feb 2008) - Part 1

This is my first trip in the year 2008...and i love to say that it was a wonderful trip. The trip began on Saturday morning at Argo Technology Park-Mardi Cameron Highland. It was a very nice place with nice building and a beautiful scenery. I gather a lot of information from this visit especially in moderate cilimate plants. Here i post some pictures of fruits that i took from Mardi Farm.

Strawberry ( Fragaria x ananassa (Weston) Duchesne ex Rozier)

Note : Fragaria x ananassa is hybrid of Fragaria chiloensis (from America) and Fragaria virginiana (from Europe). This species is commercially planted in high volumes at moderate and subtropic climate including Malaysia's highland like Cameron.

And, since this is Chinese New Year Season, I would like to introduce some plants or foods that commonly associate with this celebration.

First of all, Chinese New Year (CNY) definitely couldn't lack of Honey Mandarin.

Common Name : Mandarin Orange, Honey Mandarin, Limau Mandarin

Significance : Honey Mandarins are picked as one of the CNY symbolic food because in Chinese, this fruits is pronounce as 'gan' (柑), which also mean wealthy.

Since Chinese people like things that sound nice, like that indicate or give symbolic of 'lucky' and 'wealthy', others plant or product of plant that used in CNY incude as below...

Beautiful Bauhinia

When on driving either on the housing area, federal road or highway I keep on noticing these flowering trees on the road side. As far as I know I never miss noticing one, I’m fascinated with the flower’s pink and purple colour which is my favorite colour.

I learned that the name of the tree is Bauhinia blakeana (Tapak Kuda -Malay Name). Bauhinia blakeana is an evergreen tree, in the genus Bauhinia, with large thick leaves and striking purplish red flowers. The Bauhinia double-lobed leaf is similar in shape to a heart, or a butterfly. A typical leaf is 7-10 cm long and 10-13 cm broad, with a deep cleft dividing the apex. It is usually sterile (does not produce seed), suggesting a hybrid origin, probably between Bauhinia variegata and Bauhinia purpurea, though this is still a matter of debate.

I choose this tree last time for my pollen assignment but unfortunately by the time I’m writing this article, the tree’s picture that I had is out of focus so I took the picture below from wikipedia as a reference.

It's from family Zamiaceae.

Zamia fischeri.

Z. fischeri is endemic to Maxico and threatened by habitat loss.

This species usually is easy to recognize since it is an unusual species in that the stem and seed cones are unusually large given the size of the leaves and overall stature of the plant. Besides, it has small papyraceous leaves with no prickles.

Z. fischeri is somewhat similar to Z. vazquezii which has commonly been called Z. fischeri in horticulture. Z. vazquezii differs in having very small prickles on the petiole and I am sure that this Zamia at my house doesn't have it.

i'm sorry Min Gek..me too..don't know about the plant..

and i'm still new in this field..it was interesting if only we know all kind of plant in the whole world...with a point, can even tell about the scientific name..

the cone look alike to Cycadaceae...or should it belong to Zamiaeae..please correct me..

i just wonder if you all ever notice about this plant...it always beside us..but sometime we ignore it..

This is Mimosa pudica L., also known as pokok semalu. It's a sensitive plant. when we touch it, it'll look shy and close all of it's leaf..malu-malu..that's why we call it semalu. However, it's thorny..small, shy and thorny..mm..we (women) should have that kind of attitude i guest..we are small compare to guys..

Shy is a proper attitude to asian girl..hehe..and thorny..when we faces danger, in this cruel world, we should be more becareful and be as thorny as Mimosa which can protect ourselves..

This kind of plant can be found anywhere..partner to the grass..

Yet, I can't borrow camera..because my friend still in holiday..So, i took this picture from ms.wikipedia.org.

It has medicinal use. The root can best be boiled, which help reduce whiteness(keputihan)..this is good to us, women and seems like there's no man in our class..except other subject..hehe..

also known can help the insomnias....so if you are an insomnia..put it under your pillow..i don't have insomnia..so i can't tell the result..tell me if you done it!

It also help in reducing cough and rheumatic. However, it's used are more on helping women..easy to deliver baby, mm...Kak Hani you should try it! also can be apply to swollen breast, problem to digestion.

Hello...

I just came back from Hari Raya (Eid) holiday. After relax from classes and assignments about a week, now it's time for blogging + assignments + projects.

Before that, I would like to wish you all Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir & Batin (in Malaysia) or Happy Eid ul-Fitr or Id-Ul-Fitr (International). I hope you all have a pleasant holiday and don't forget after holiday our duty is waiting.

I have an interesting plant to share with you. A day before Hari Raya my mother brought a new plant. It has broad leaves and purple flowers. Actually this is my first time see this flowers.

It seems like Calathea lutea but the inflorescence is different.

C. lutea has long inflorescence alternating 8" bract of reddish/brown to tan with yellow flowers.

You can try compare both plants, it look similar, right?.....

After spent few hour surfing internet, finally, I found the true scientific name....
Thaumatococcus daniellii......

Thaumatococcus daniellii, (Marantaceae) native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa. It is the only species in this genus. The plant can grow up to 2.5 m tall and closely resembles Calathea. It so easy to be confused. For a first time I saw this plant, I also thought it was Calathea but after I saw it flower and search for its' scientific name, it is not Calathea.

The plant bears attractive purple flowers that are held on simple or forked spikes found close to the ground.

The pyramid-shaped fruits (not fruiting yet at my house) are bright-red when ripe and within each fruit are seeds that are covered by a thin layer of translucent, sweet-tasting aril. The black hard seeds look like stones when dried.

Interestingly, Thaumatococcus daniellii is better known for its use as a sweetener in its native country and hence its local name of 'Miracle Fruit'.

The translucent flesh of the fruit contains the protein, thaumatin, which is purportedly said to be several hundred times sweeter than table sugar! Thaumatin has already been approved as a food additive and alternative sweetener in the European Union as well as in many other countries.

Ps: It's not easy to identify a plant, we can not identify based on one character only (e.g. leaf or flower only) but all characters that can be used or see...

If Kak Hani kindly promote her backyard ulam, I also want to introduce some (actually is all) 'ulam's and spices that I plant at my space-limited veranda at 4th floor apartment.

Use as spice in Laksa and sometimes I add it in my Asam Pedas.

But don't ever over consume it, especially in raw! I tried before. I took about 7 of its leave and consume it as ulam. The result is my throat become so pain for next 3 days.

Sambung nyawa is used in folk medicine to treat inflammation, rheumatism, and viral ailments.

But I take it on purpose merely as ulam. It taste quite crispy.

Very delicious if mix it in Tom Yam, right?

Daun Pandan

Pandanus amaryllifolius

Pandanaceae

Pandan leaves are used to add a distinct aroma to rice and curry dishes such as nasi lemak, kaya('jam') preserves, and desserts such as pandan cake.

I also add it in my syrup to have a nicer taste.

But I more prefer consume it as ulam rather than as juice.

This succulent and mucilaginous plant is used tradisionally for poulticing the burn, to treat the wound, daubed on the abdomen for fever, and also upon swelling.

But normally I use it as cosmetic material, daubed on skin or face, make me feel so cool and fresh!

Most of us know the uses of those spices and ulam, but only few among us that memorize its saintific name, moreover on its taxonomic.

This is the first time for me to realize that our curry leaf actually is sitting with our lemon in a family - Rutaceae. Indeed, the curry leaf is the sister genus to 'sedap malam' Murraya paniculata!

Hi All, Selamat Hari Raya. People said that hari raya celebration last for a month and i think it’s not to late to wish to all. I’m still back home in Kelantan and wish to share with you guys one of the favorite food here, ‘Ulam’. ‘Ulam’ are plants that can be eaten raw, as a form of local salad and eaten with rice.

In Kelantan, people like to eat ‘ulam’ with a special type of sauce called ‘budu’ or ‘sambal belacan’. As far as I know other states also have ‘ulam’ but in my opinion it is more common in Kelantan even to the younger generation. The easiest example is my brother which is only 12 years old really like to eat ‘ulam’ very much. Here, I’m posting some picture of ‘ulam’ that are found at the area surrounding my house and easily found in Kelantan’s local market.

The "Ulam Raja" shoots is an example of an "Ulam" that is usually taken raw. "Ulam Raja" when literally translated means the King's salad. The scientific name for the plant is Cosmos caudatus. The photograph on the left shows the edible young shoots that are used for "Ulam" and believed contain with vitamin A and mineral like calcium that is important for human bones.

Jambu golok/Gajus or its scientifc name Annacardium occidentale can also be eaten raw as 'ulam'. This shoots is said can slower the degeneration process.

Kadok or Piper sarmentosum is also a well known 'ulam'. It is a climbing plant which lives in the shady wild. Its leaves is used as an additional flavouring in cooking especially ‘masak lemak’ and high in calcium which is used by our body to strengthen our bones and to avoid osteoporosis especially in women.

Putat or Barringtonia racemosa is a medium size tree where its shoots are eaten as 'ulam'.
